She laid it on her notebook and stared. The others were gone, except for Brooklyn, and Oliver, who was groaning in another room. The poor guy was having a thoroughly shitty day, having been turned into a vampire before being drained nearly dry for a witch’s spell.

Using her laptop, she searched the phone number and found nothing. Even adding the name Durand yielded nothing. She stared at her phone for what felt like ages before finally dialing the number. It rang once, but she lost her nerve and hung up. She tried again, hanging up after three rings. Before she called again, the phone buzzed with an incoming call.

It was fate, wasn’t it?

She answered the phone. “Hello? Who is this?”

A male voice spoke. “Who is this? You called me.” His voice was calm, though he sounded a bit suspicious.

“I…”

“Are you in trouble?” he asked. “Tell me what’s wrong.”

Her life was truly coming apart at the seams, because the faceless man saying tell me what’s wrong nearly shattered her resolve. Holding back tears, she said, “Please don’t hang up. I was part of the team that raided Infinity.”

“You—what the hell? What do you want?” His tone had shifted now. “Where did you get this number?”

“It was in your drawer,” she said. “Mr. Durand, I…I think someone is playing both of us. Who is Carrigan Shea?”

“What? I want to know where you are. Where’s Sasha Morozov?”

Her gut twisted in a knot. “Tell me about Shea.”

“He’s bad news,” Mr. Durand said. “I’ve spent the last few months trying to clean up after him, and you just set us back by weeks.”

“So…he’s a bad vampire?”

The other man let out a barking laugh. “Yes, he’s a bad vampire.”

“He says he wants to wipe out the Auberon so that the humans will be safe,” she ventured.

“He wants to wipe out the Auberon so there’s no one left to stand up to him,” the other man countered. “We’ve been the only thing preventing him from doing far worse.” His tone shifted when he asked, “What have you done to Sasha?”

“Who is he to you?”

“He’s my brother. And if you’ve hurt him—”

“He’s not hurt. I care about him,” she said.

“Right. A Shieldsmen hunter caring for a vampire,” Durand said with a bitter laugh.

“I do,” she protested. “Do you know how to fix his memory?”

The other man was quiet. “I have an idea, but it’s impossible. Bring him back to us. We can take care of him.”

Wasn’t that the right thing?

She was quiet for a while before the vampire spoke again. “You know, you don’t have to do what you’re doing. I know you don’t believe me, but all my court has done for years is live quietly and watch out for humanity. We could help each other find Carrigan Shea, and the world would be much safer without him.”

Her chest tightened, and she said, “I have to go.”

“Wait—”

She hung up and ignored the call when the phone rang again.

Of course the Auberon would say that Shea was bad; he was trying to stop them.
